Most people treat motivation like weather. It shows up or it does not, and you plan your ambitions around its unpredictable arrivals. That model fails because it gets the causality backward. Extrinsic rewards can drive effort powerfully in the short term, but they carry a well-documented risk: when an activity you already enjoy becomes tied to an external reward, the reward can crowd out the internal interest. It is that rewards interact with existing motivation in ways that are easy to get wrong.
There is also a third framing worth holding. A useful structure combines these: a distant outcome for direction, a proximal process goal for daily action, and a clear metric so you know whether you hit it.

For example: "When it is 7 a.m. and I have finished coffee, I will put on my running shoes and leave the house." The mechanism is that you are pre-deciding the cue-behavior link, so the situation itself triggers the action rather than requiring deliberation in the moment.
This works because it offloads control from conscious intention to environmental cue. It is one of the most robust findings in behavioral science, and it costs nothing to apply. The common mistake is writing intentions that are too vague or that depend on a cue you will not reliably encounter. Anchor the behavior to something that already happens without fail.
The practical implication is that you should stop expecting a behavior to feel effortless on a fixed schedule. Instead, focus on consistency of context. Missing a single day does not appear to derail habit formation much, but missing many days in a row does. The goal is not perfection; it is keeping the cue-behavior link intact.
Mistake 2: Relying on outcome goals for daily direction. Outcome goals are lagging indicators. They tell you how you did, not what to do next.
Mistake 3: Overcorrecting after a lapse. The "what the hell" effect, studied by Janet Polivy and colleagues, describes the tendency to abandon a goal entirely after a single failure. One missed workout becomes a lost week. The fix is to treat lapses as data, not verdicts, and to have a pre-planned recovery response.
Mistake 4: Confusing intensity with sustainability. A plan you can only sustain for two weeks is not a plan. It is a sprint disguised as a lifestyle change.
Mistake 5: Ignoring the environment. Willpower-based strategies fail precisely when you are tired, stressed, or distracted, which is when you need them most. Environmental design works when you are not at your best.
