Federal panel recommends suspending American Psychological Association’s accreditation authority

A federal advisory panel has recommended that the American Psychological Association temporarily lose its authority to accredit doctoral training programs. The recommendation follows mounting complaints from Jewish professionals who say the field has tolerated antisemitic ideas in classrooms and clinical training.

According to the concerns raised, some psychology programs have framed Zionism as a mental illness or treated it as a symptom requiring correction. Jewish students and faculty report that such characterizations have gone unchallenged by instructors and supervisors. In several cases, these views have reportedly shaped how trainees are taught to assess patients who express connection to Israel or Jewish identity.

The panel's recommendation does not immediately strip the association of its accrediting role. It calls for a suspension while a broader review takes place. Supporters of the move argue that accreditation carries enormous power over curriculum, faculty hiring, and what counts as legitimate clinical practice. If that power is used to legitimize political bias, they say, the consequences reach far beyond campus debates.
