First-Time Fathers in Management Roles Tend to Hire More Women, Research Shows

Male managers who become fathers to a daughter for the first time often change their hiring habits in a measurable way. According to new research, these managers tend to bring more women onto their teams and increase the share of earnings that goes to female employees. The change does not appear gradually over many years. Instead, it shows up soon after the child is born, suggesting that the experience of raising a daughter shifts how these men view women in the workplace.

The study adds to a growing body of evidence that personal life events can shape professional decisions. For years, economists and sociologists have debated whether becoming a parent changes attitudes toward gender roles. This research offers a clear answer in at least one area: hiring. Managers with a new daughter appear more willing to give women a chance, whether in entry-level roles or in positions with higher pay.

What makes the finding notable is that company performance does not suffer. The researchers found no detectable drop in productivity, profit, or other business outcomes after the hiring shift. That undercuts a common worry that diversity efforts come at a cost to results. In this case, broadening the pool of candidates seems to work without harming the bottom line.

The effect is strongest among men who had no daughters before. It is less clear whether the change lasts for a career or fades over time. Still, the pattern suggests that lived experience, not just formal training, can move the needle on who gets hired.
