The Nigerian Association of Forensic Psychologists has highlighted the critical role the field plays in supporting national security and the justice system. The association's president, Dr David Shekwolo, made this known during a recent gathering of professionals in the field.
Shekwolo explained that forensic psychology goes beyond the courtroom. It involves understanding criminal behavior, assessing the mental state of suspects, and providing expert insight that helps investigators and legal practitioners make informed decisions. He noted that security agencies often rely on psychological profiling to track down offenders and prevent future crimes.
According to him, the justice system also depends heavily on forensic psychologists when determining competency to stand trial, evaluating witness credibility, and assessing the risk of reoffending. These tasks, he said, require specialized training and a deep understanding of human behavior.
Shekwolo called for greater investment in forensic psychology education and practice across the country. He urged relevant authorities to integrate the discipline more fully into security and legal frameworks, stressing that doing so would improve case outcomes and public safety.
He also encouraged young professionals to consider the field, noting that demand for their skills will continue to grow as the country faces complex security challenges.
