New research suggests that people raised in strict purity culture, which emphasizes abstinence before marriage and frames sex as morally dangerous, carry significant psychological and sexual burdens well into adulthood. The findings point to higher rates of shame, anxiety, and difficulty with intimacy among those who grew up in these environments.
The study, which surveyed adults who were raised in evangelical Christian or similar conservative communities, found that participants reported more sexual guilt and less sexual satisfaction compared to peers from less restrictive backgrounds. Many described feeling disconnected from their own bodies and struggling to communicate openly with partners. Some also reported avoiding sex altogether or experiencing performance anxiety, not because of physical issues, but because of deep-seated beliefs that sex is inherently sinful.
Researchers note that purity culture often teaches that any sexual thought or action outside marriage is a serious moral failure. This creates a binary where individuals see themselves as either pure or ruined, with little room for grace or growth. When people inevitably fall short of these ideals, they often internalize shame rather than seeking healthy ways to process their experiences.
The impact does not stop at personal discomfort. The study links this upbringing to broader relational problems, including difficulty trusting partners and a tendency to view sex as a test of worth rather than a shared act of connection. Experts say that therapy and open conversations can help, but the first step is recognizing that the shame is learned, not inherent. For many, unlearning these messages takes years of conscious effort.
