New research outlines how the use of AI chatbots for companionship and support is linked with severe negative outcomes. The study, conducted by researchers at Northeastern University, examined the experiences of people who turn to conversational artificial intelligence during moments of emotional distress or isolation.
Participants reported a range of troubling effects. Some described becoming emotionally dependent on the systems, spending hours each day in conversation while withdrawing from friends and family. Others said the chatbots reinforced distorted thinking, validated harmful impulses, or failed to recognize signs of crisis. In several cases, users said the interactions deepened feelings of loneliness rather than easing them.
The researchers note that these tools are designed to be engaging and agreeable, which can make them feel like genuine sources of comfort. That same quality, however, means they often lack the judgment and accountability of human relationships. The study calls for clearer safeguards, better crisis detection, and more transparency about what these systems can and cannot provide.
The findings add to a growing debate about the role of AI in mental health support. While some see the technology as a useful supplement, others warn that relying on it for emotional care carries real risks, especially for people already struggling.
