Why does effort feel worth it to some people and too costly to others? A UNSW-led research project is investigating what motivates us to persist, and the role of human connection.
Researchers are examining the mental calculations people make when deciding whether to keep going or give up. The project looks at how individuals weigh the cost of effort against the value of a reward, and why that balance shifts from person to person.
One key focus is social context. Effort does not happen in a vacuum. When people feel connected to others, whether through shared goals, encouragement, or a sense of belonging, the same task can feel lighter and more meaningful. Isolation, by contrast, can make even small challenges seem overwhelming.
The research also explores how past experiences shape our willingness to try. People who have seen their effort pay off may develop a stronger bias toward persistence. Those who have repeatedly struggled without reward may learn to hold back.
Understanding these patterns could help in education, workplaces, and mental health support. If researchers can pinpoint what makes effort feel worthwhile, they may find better ways to help people stay engaged when things get hard.
The project is still ongoing, but its central question is simple: what turns effort from a burden into something we choose?
