Why You Can Miss Annie on the Ceiling in ‘Hereditary,’ According to a Psychologist

Why You Can Miss Annie on the Ceiling in ‘Hereditary,’ According to a Psychologist

In 2018's Hereditary, Peter wakes up disoriented and walks through his dim house while the audience around you starts gasping at something you can't find on screen. The moment in question involves Annie, played by Toni Collette, positioned on the ceiling, and many viewers miss her entirely during a first watch. A psychologist recently explained why this happens, and the answer has less to do with poor observation than with how human attention actually works.

According to the psychologist, the brain filters out unexpected information when it is focused on a primary task. During the scene, viewers are tracking Peter's movements and bracing for a jump scare, so their attention narrows. Annie blends into the shadows above, and the eye simply does not register her. This is a survival mechanism, not a failure. The brain prioritizes what seems relevant and discards the rest.

The effect also explains why the scene works so well on a second viewing. Once you know she is there, your attention shifts, and the figure becomes obvious. Filmmakers use this tendency deliberately, hiding details in plain sight so that the reveal lands harder later. The psychologist noted that expectation shapes perception, and horror relies on that gap between what is shown and what is seen.
