Can Eating Disorders Spread? The Troubling Truth and the Reason for Hope

A teenager recently asked me if eating disorders were contagious. The answer is more complicated, and more hopeful, than a simple no.

Research shows that eating disorders are not contagious in the way a cold or flu is. You cannot catch one by sitting next to someone at lunch or sharing a water bottle. However, the behaviors and thought patterns that fuel these disorders can spread through social influence, especially among close friends, family members, and online communities. Studies have found that when one person in a friend group develops disordered eating, others in that group are at higher risk. This is not because of a virus, but because of shared attitudes about weight, dieting, and body image.

The bad news is that this social transmission is real. Peer pressure, comparison on social media, and even well-meaning comments about "clean eating" can normalize dangerous habits. For vulnerable individuals, exposure to someone else's restriction or purging can trigger their own struggles.

But here is the good news: the same social pathways that spread harm can also spread healing. When a friend or family member models healthy eating, speaks openly about body acceptance, or seeks treatment, it creates a ripple effect. Recovery is also contagious. Support groups, therapy, and honest conversations about mental health can shift the culture around food and body image. The key is awareness. Recognizing that these patterns can spread means we can also choose to spread compassion, education, and hope instead.
