Frontiers | Empowering leadership as a secure base:enhancing organizational identification via age-contingent employee resilience

New research reveals that empowering leadership acts as a psychological "secure base" for employees, significantly boosting their resilience and, in turn, their sense of belonging to the organization. This dynamic, however, varies notably with age, highlighting the importance of tailored management approaches.

The study indicates that when leaders share power, encourage autonomy, and express confidence in their teams, employees feel more supported to take initiative and recover from setbacks. This enhanced resilience becomes a key driver for employees to strongly identify with their company, seeing its successes and values as their own.

Interestingly, the strength of this effect depends on the employee's age. The positive link between resilience and organizational identification was found to be significantly stronger for older employees compared to their younger colleagues. Experts suggest this may be due to older workers' greater accumulation of resources and life experience, which allows them to more effectively leverage resilient states to deepen their organizational ties.

These findings underscore that empowering leadership is not a one-size-fits-all solution. For organizations aiming to build a more resilient and committed workforce, the research advocates for leadership styles that not only delegate authority but also thoughtfully consider the diverse needs of a multi-generational team. This approach is particularly crucial in today's complex and fast-paced business environment.
