A new study in psychology suggests that people with strong narcissistic traits tend to view God not as a loving or forgiving figure, but as a harsh punisher who still owes them special favors. Researchers found that these individuals often approach religion as a tool for personal benefit rather than genuine faith.
The study, published in a peer-reviewed journal, examined how narcissism shapes religious beliefs. Participants who scored high on narcissism scales were more likely to describe God as angry and judgmental. At the same time, they felt entitled to divine rewards, believing they deserved special treatment from this punishing authority.
According to the researchers, this creates a strange contradiction. Narcissists see God as strict and demanding, yet they also expect God to bend the rules for them personally. This pattern mirrors how narcissists often view human relationships: they hold others to high standards while feeling exempt from those same rules.
The findings suggest that for some people, religion becomes a way to boost social status or seek emotional comfort rather than a path to spiritual growth. Instead of humble devotion, they use faith as a bargaining chip, hoping to secure favors from a deity they also fear.
Psychologists note that this mindset can lead to a shallow, transactional form of spirituality. The study adds to a growing body of research showing how personality traits shape the way people interpret religious teachings.
