Reflecting on My Aging Mother’s Move to a Retirement Home

Reflecting on My Aging Mother’s Move to a Retirement Home

The day we moved my mother into her retirement apartment, she stood in the middle of the small living room and turned in a slow circle. She did not say much, just ran her hand along the back of the armchair we had picked out together. It was a good chair, sturdy and easy to get out of, with a fabric that felt soft but would not stain. I watched her and thought about all the other rooms she had made into homes over the years, each one filled with the same ceramic birds and the same brass lamp. This one was smaller, but the light came in well from the east window.

For months before that day, I had carried a guilt that sat heavy in my chest. Every time she said she was fine, I heard the unspoken truth that she was not. The stairs had become a mountain. The garden she loved had turned into a source of worry rather than joy. I told myself I was being practical, that this was the right call, but practical did not quiet the feeling that I was somehow failing her.

What surprised me most was not her sadness, but her relief. On the second evening, she called me and said she had slept through the night for the first time in a year. She had eaten dinner in the common dining room and laughed with a woman who used to teach piano. She told me she felt lighter, as if a weight she had been carrying alone had finally been shared.

I am learning that caring for a parent is not about fixing everything. It is about standing beside them while they make their own choices, even the hard ones. Some days I still feel a pang when I see her old house, now empty. But then I visit her and find her in the lounge, playing cards with her new neighbors, and I remember that love does not always mean holding on. Sometimes it means helping someone find a new place to belong, and trusting that they will be okay there.
