The Marquette University community is mourning the passing of Dr. Anees Sheikh, professor emeritus of psychology and an internationally recognized pioneer in the study of mental imagery. Sheikh spent decades on the faculty, shaping both the department and the field through his research and teaching.
Sheikh was widely credited with helping establish mental imagery as a legitimate area of psychological inquiry. His work explored how imagined experiences influence emotion, memory, and healing, and he authored and edited numerous books and articles that became foundational texts for researchers and clinicians. Colleagues described him as a rigorous scholar whose curiosity crossed disciplinary boundaries, drawing connections between psychology, medicine, and the humanities.
Generations of students remembered Sheikh as a demanding but generous mentor. He supervised doctoral candidates, encouraged undergraduate research, and remained in contact with former students long after they left campus. Many went on to careers in clinical practice, academia, and health research, carrying forward his emphasis on careful observation and humane care.
Beyond his scholarship, Sheikh was known for his warmth and his commitment to the university's mission. He participated in campus conversations about ethics and well-being and was a steady presence at departmental events. Those who worked alongside him recalled his dry humor and his willingness to listen.
Funeral arrangements and memorial plans were not immediately announced. Members of the psychology department said they would share details with the campus community as they become available.
