While many people count down the days to beach season and long, sunny evenings, a significant number of people actually dread the arrival of summer. This condition is often called Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder, or summer-pattern SAD. Unlike the classic winter blues that bring on lethargy and carbohydrate cravings, summer SAD can trigger opposite symptoms: intense anxiety, agitation, insomnia, and a loss of appetite.
Experts believe the cause may be linked to longer daylight hours disrupting the body's natural circadian rhythm and melatonin production. The heat and humidity can also play a major role, making it physically uncomfortable and mentally draining. For some, the social pressure to be active and outgoing during summer months adds a layer of stress that isn't present in winter.
If you find yourself feeling irritable, restless, or hopeless as the temperature rises, you are not alone. Treatment often involves staying cool, using blackout curtains to control light exposure, and sticking to a consistent sleep schedule. Some people also benefit from therapy or light-blocking sunglasses during peak sun hours. Recognizing that your struggle is a real, biological response can be the first step toward managing it.
